Beccy Smith

Managing Director,

Lakeland Orthotics Ltd

Beccy is the MD of Lakeland Orthotics Ltd, an orthotics manufacturing business she runs with assistance from her husband Mark. Beccy is born and bred in West Cumbria but fell in love with the area when studying for a BSc Honours degree in Business and Equine Technology at Bishop Burton College.

After graduating in 1997, Beccy worked around the UK and in Cyprus gaining experience and managing riding establishments including a British Armed Forces Riding School. Beccy returned to the UK before studying once more and joining the RSPCA Inspector ranks in 2002. This didn’t quite turn out to be what she expected however and Beccy returned to a lifelong passion of business and equines; setting up a unique luxury livery and equine rehabilitation centre in East Yorkshire.

This facility was the first of its kind in the North of England and it was voted one of the “top 3 poshest livery yards in the UK” by prestigious “Horse & Hound” magazine in 2005.

Dismayed at the lack of appreciation of chronic health issues and the resulting loss of performance in horses, Beccy sold the business and set out to re-train as a specialist equine consultant. Over the next few years, Beccy gained many qualifications and built a successful sole trader business and soon became a well-respected equine advocate specialising in holistic equine podiatry. Chronic injury and ill-health halted this business in 2014 and precipitated a radical change in lifestyle and belief system and Beccy and her family relocated back to Cumbria to re-group. Never one to give up, Beccy recovered her health and just for fun, trained to be a human wellness coach and more lately; a qualified spiritual healer.

In these challenging but uniquely rewarding industries Beccy cut her teeth as an entrepreneur. She used the experiences of both the successful and the not so successful ventures to create a more deliberate and rewarding future for herself both professionally and personally. When an opportunity presented for Beccy to set up an orthotics manufacturing business, she jumped at the chance.

Her sense of humour, passion and positive outlook on life are just some of the qualities that have helped her develop her successful business. She is excited about her future plans to expand into the veterinary orthotic market place and…. well, watch this space!

When she is not in the Hull office, Beccy enjoys cooking healthy, plant-based dishes and hiking in the beautiful Cumbrian countryside where she and Mark live with their family of 6 rescue horses, 2 dogs and 3 cats! Beccy appreciates the challenges of starting or running a business and would relish the opportunity to inspire others to follow their entrepreneurial dreams.
