Director / Designer,
At Ships and Pigs we work on many creative projects but primarily specialise in the design of exhibitions and trade stands.
I founded my business in 2010 after being made redundant from a design role in London. I took this as an opportunity to move back home to Hull and worked initially as a sole trader, freelancing for larger creative agencies or build companies across the UK who needed to outsource the creative work.
When I set up, I didn’t have any knowledge of how to run a business, but I knew how to design and I knew what service I was giving my clients. I steadily built a solid reputation in the industry and with some mentoring and ‘learning on the job’, I learnt how to run my business effectively.
At the end of 2014 I was named as Freelancer of the Year for 2015, an award that led me to Downing Street to be personally congratulated by the Prime Minister. This award showed me that my hard work had been worth it, and gave me the confidence I needed to grow my business. I set up as a limited company and started hiring my own local and national freelancers in order to take on more work with more clients.
I get approached a lot by other people in creative industries who are considering becoming self -employed. I know first hand how daunting it can be without someone to offer guidance so I always make the time to help and give advice where I can.
I work hard, but when I’m not working I enjoy playing piano, I am a keen indoor rock climber, and I love biking.
