Over the past 30 years Paul has taken Sewell from an East Hull builder of repute to the nationally recognised, award winning, multi disciplined Group of companies it is today.
From his beginnings in his fathers fruit and vegetable business, and a brief flirtation with professional football, he gained a first class degree in construction and then went onto work for a national construction company. He, however, yearned for life back in East Yorkshire and his own organisation to grow and develop, so he joined the then F Sewell & Son Ltd in 1978. Together with family member Dennis Sewell he grew the business to be a plc and a leading construction company in the region, and then diversified it into development, facilities management, and petrol retail to become the Sewell Group by the turn of the millennium.
Over the past 15 years the company has developed an enviable specialism in holistic estates solutions for the public sector, particularly in Health and Education, and is seen as a pioneer in PPP and PFI through such as NHS LIFT and Building Schools for the Future. Meanwhile Sewell Retail has expanded into one of the top 20 independents in the country and were UK Forecourt retailer of the year in 2009.
Always interested and involved with life outside the business to ensure Sewell properly related to the communities it served, he took early roles with Government Training Boards and helped pioneer Investors in People in the region in the 1990s. In 2002 he was appointed President of the Hull & Humber Chamber of Commerce, and Chair of the Humber Forum/Humber Economic Partnership, and subsequently board director of the Hull Urban Regeneration company City Build. He is now a board member of the Humber Local Enterprise Partnership where he concentrates on the Skills agenda.
In 2008 he was recognised by the Institute of Directors for his overall contribution to the Yorkshire economy, and then by the University of Hull with a degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa. In 2011 he was honoured by being made an OBE by the Queen for his contribution to business and the community of Kingston upon Hull.
The company has recently been continuously listed in the Business Growth Awards and in 2012 Paul was specially recognised for his outstanding leadership. This is maybe unsurprising for Sewell have been a Best Companies 3 star “extra ordinary place to work” for the past 5 years, leading to its Sunday Times listing as a top ten place to work in the country.
